Planning - Locations

Images of a number of possible locations for shooting the opening scene of the film.

Any scenes involving classrooms, Library, college car park will be shot while we are in college during lesson time.

Park location is located opposite city and Islington college therefore can do shooting during class time. Park location will be used while characters are travelling to the college. his location will be appropriate for the use of either El or Grace.
White house will be appropriate for the character of Britney as it is very clean and polished and looks like somewhere a person from a wealthy background would live.

All these locations are well known parts of the city which will be used in our title sequence when we have shots of the different places in  London. Shooting will take place during half term as we will need a slightly longer amount of time to get to the different locations.

Planning - Costume

Costume and props for each of the characters:

Samantha

  • Sam's costume should be very colourful to show the fact that she is a very positive person who is always happy.
  • Pink, blue and white all tend to be quite positive bright happy colours just like the character.
  • Character should not be seen in any dark clothing as dark clothing is very depressing and negative.
Grace

  •  Grace's costume should be very sensible and business like but still appropriate to her age.
  • The costume needs to make her seem very sensible and professional which is why her costume will be very simple and not too revealing.
  • Props such as books and glasses are used to show the typical perfect student who is only focused on her work.

Britney

  • Britney is the typical princess character of the film and is very spoilt and stuck up
  • Costume should contain quite expensive pieces of clothing showing that she comes from a rich background.
  • Having her dressed up in heels and expensive clothing shows her as someone who is quite vain as she is completely over-dressed showing that she wants to be noticed.

El

  •  El is the outcast of the group the one who does not fit in with the rest of the school.
  • Dark colours showing the fact that she is quite a moody miserable character
  • No expensive clothing showing that she may come from a tough background

pitch: Title/ synopsis of our teen movie

Film titles usually give the audience a taste of what the content of the film is to be about. This is done either simply through the title of the film or other elements such as the background picture of cast featured in the movie.

It is important that we capture some of the conventions real teen films include in their titles. This because the title is all the audience has to go from before trailer and such are released. From the title of our teen film the audience get a sense of what it is going to be about.

‘Freaky Friday’ is an example of a teen film that gives the audience a sense of what they can expect from the film. Although there is use of one type of font the two different colours used create a contrast in the characters the audience can expect to find in the film. The word ‘freaky’ has red in it while the word ‘Friday’ has a light purple. This shows the two different personalities the protagonists have as red is seen as a “too hot to handle” colour and the light purple a “plain Jane” colour- which is a spot on description about the mother and daughter.

Furthermore in the film ‘Spring Breakers’ the writing of the title is not precise as it looks as though it has been written itself several times. Students tend to do this when bored in lesson which gives an impression that the film is going to revolve itself around a group of students. The harshness of the letters being written over several times shows a sign of chaos. However the bright colours used in the title show an element of fun in the film.

The pink cursive writing in the title of our teen film represent the feminine characters in our teen film as pink is a colour usually associated with Barbie’s whereas the red block capital letters contrast the pretty pink as the red gives a sense of danger and also the capital letters symbolise dominance- reflecting other members of the teen film.

Brief outline of our teen film:
Four girls of different backgrounds find they share a past together when a sudden lockdown in school results in them spending the night in college.

Brief outline of the opening;
The opening of our teen film typically follows teen films as we have the girls arriving at school (in their different forms of transport etc.) and several shots of them on their journey to college. We then have them settling in a class that they share but do not associate with one another. Suddenly an alarm goes off indicating the ‘meltdown’ in which students and teachers need to leave the building immediately as there is only a minute until the system locks down. In this moment of frenzy everyone leaves however complications occur (bag stuck to seat etc.) to the four girls which leaves them trapped in the classroom that automatically locks.

Pitch

Risk Assessmment
One of the locations we are filming in is busy roads, we will need to be extra careful handling the camera and equipment. Make sure they are firmly attached to the tripod.
Weather- We need to check the weather beforehand as in half term we will go out and film scenes that are outside of college.

Skill Audit to date
Different types of equipment we learnt to use was Tri Pod, the flip camera.
Different software we used was Creative Commons which is a website for music that is Copy right free. We used Final Cut pro for editing. I've learnt many new skills including adding GIFS and embedding video's we learnt this process when we put our Shot by shot remake onto our blogs. We also learnt how to use creative commons which is where artists upload their music and can be used for free so we won't have to worry about Copyright.

Institutional Detail
We found inspiration for our own teen films in Bratz, Easy A and Mean Girls. Film company's such as Paramount Pictures, Screen Gems and Lionsgate Entertainment would produce our teen film as Paramount Pictures are who produced extremely popular teen film Mean Girls. Also, the production company of Easy A is Screen Gems and Lionsgate entertainment produced Bratz. As we were inspired by these films are our teen film will be similar in many ways therefore having any of these production company's would be ideal.

Audience Detail
Our target audience would be mainly teenagers mainly female aged 13-18 because they can relate to the film or imagine themselves in a similar situation whether that be based on location such as school.
Our teen film would appeal to them as it is set in the school so in many ways they can relate and creates an interest also in our film we have 4 main girls who have different personality's and fit to stereotypes that are shown in other films such as Mean Girls so we have the main intelligent character 'Grace'. We have the dumb bimbo like character 'Samantha' who is quite careless and lost in her own world. We also have that mean girl character who everyone hates and is quite stuck up and vain 'Britney' which is in other teen films such as Regina George in Mean Girls and in Easy A the character Marianne played by Amanda Bynes. Lastly we have the lazy unmotivated character 'El'. In one way or another our audience will be able to relate to our film as we have various personalities.

Shot by shot remake - Comparison

There are many comparisons between the Breakfast Club and our remake for example

The location - set in school, our remake was also set in school/college.

                College                                                                  Breakfast Club

The Credits- we tried to get the credits pretty much the same as in Breakfast club using the same order which was the name of the studio, production company, directors name, starring and then casting.
In the starring credits instead of using all the actors and actresses we used our own names as we were starring in our own remake.

              Remake                                                                    Breakfast Club

Mise-en-Scene- We tried to make the remake as similar to the actual version but obviously we couldn't use real cars so we used toy cars as an alternative. We used extreme close up and still shot to make the shot as the one in Breakfast club however being a toy car it isn't exactly the same.

              Remake                                                                       Breakfast Club

Dialogue- There's an obvious difference between the remake and the actual version, we didn't have much dialogue in the remake it was very short and simple whereas in The Breakfast Club there was a full conversation which we didn't do. However the shots and how the scene were filmed were the same and we followed the same characters and used similar dialogue to show the idea of how the characters are, so in the scene with the 'princess' we included her father saying she would go shopping to show her character but we did have complete full conversation like the one in the Breakfast Club.

Comparison - Shot by Shot remake

I think that the remake of The breakfast Club was similar to the original make in many ways. The opening credits in which the starts with was similar as the remake includes ;

  • NAME OF THE STUDIO

  • NAME OF THE PRODUCTION COMPANY

  • (PRODUCER NAME) PRODUCTION or/and (director only) A FILM BY (DIRECTOR NAME)

  • STARRING

  • (FILM'S TITLE)

  • FEATURING

  • CASTING or CASTING BY

This was done in the same order as the original make, this making it a similar comparison.
The location in the opening scene of the remake was of the same location-  at a school/college, this being another comparison to the original- as it made the remake more of a resemblance.

In the remake we used toy cars to act as real cars as we tried to make it more similar to the original as possible. We felt as if it was better to use a toy car and be a 'real' car rather than to completely change the type of transport, e.g.; by using a scooter, bus or a bike. As for the actors, we used the same dialogue as the original make and acted out parts in turns.

Overall, the remake and the original have more similarities than differences, however the remake being more on the modern side.
